Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling is a procedure that removes contamination toxins, micro-organisms, calculus, plaque, and tartar below and under the gum line. Root planing involves smoothing the root surfaces of teeth so gum tissues can more firmly reattach to roots that are clean and smooth to prevent tooth loss and sensitivity problems. This procedure makes it more difficult for plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces.

Some of the many benefits of scaling and root planing include: reattachment of gums and pocket walls to root surfaces, elimination of bleeding gums, reduction of gum swelling, prevention of bone loss, decrease in tooth sensitivity due to gum recession, and prevention of future tooth loss due to periodontal disease.
